Manual facial assessments should be carried out when it is not feasible or practical to automate facial analysis.
Examples of these include inadequate lighting, conditions that cause the resident’s face to move ‘out-of-the frame’ (e.g. excessive movements in highly aggressive, agitated or distressed residents), or when facial features are not visible due to obstruction (e.g. hands over mouth) for the purpose of automated analysis.
